Main Characters & Allies In Phantom Blood

Jonathan Joestar
Jonathan is the protagonist of part 1 and the first JoJo of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series. The son of George Joestar I, Jonathan is an honest, kind and positive man whose life is fraught with tragedy after meeting his adopted older brother, Dio Brando. In his battle against Dio, Jonathan becomes a Ripple user under the tutelage of the master Will Anthonio Zeppeli. He has an arsenal of ancient martial art techniques, most inherited from Will A. Zeppeli and involving Ripple, at his disposal. Some are his original creation, each ending with Overdrive.
  • Zoom Punch: Jonathan launches his fist forward and strikes his opponent. The attack involves a Ripple breathing technique that dislocates and stretches the joints to extend the arm and give it greater reach while also using the same Ripple to dull the pain caused by the move.
  • Sendo Ripple Overdrive: Jonathan charges a Ripple wave through his arm and releases it into a solid object. The Ripple can travel through and reach anything on the other side, and anything hit by the Ripple is sent flying in a spiral.
  • Scarlet Overdrive: Charging the Ripple into one hand, Jonathan can create a Ripple of flame. He is able to transfer over this flame to another part of his body, and anything that touches that body part has a chance of catching fire.
  • Underwater Turquoise Blue Overdrive: Appropriately the strongest place to use the Ripple, Jonathan can release high powered tempests while underwater with enough force to blast enemies away.
  • Overdrive Barrage: When Jonathan jabs fast enough consecutively, he can release multiple Overdrives at once.
  • Metal Silver Overdrive: Essentially the same as a Sendo Ripple Overdrive, but with the ability of transferring through metal.
  • Life Magnetism Overdrive: With the aid of Zeppeli, Jonathan can draw all the leaves in the immediate area and magnetize them together to form one giant leaf, which was used as an impromptu-hang glider.
  • Sunlight Yellow Overdrive: His final and most memorable attack. It is a devastating and extremely rapid flurry of Ripple-infused punches with power comparable to the sun itself and has the ability to completely obliterate the Undead.

Will Anthonio Zeppeli
Zeppeli, also known as Baron Zeppeli, is Jonathan Joestar's primary ally in Phantom Blood. He is a Ripple master hailing from Italy who searches for the Stone Mask to destroy it. Hearing about Dio Brando, he thus becomes Jonathan's mentor and teaches him in the art of the Ripple as well as fights alongside him. Having studied the technique for years with masters in Tibet and trained Jonathan himself, Zeppeli is an expert when it comes to using the Ripple. Aside from attacking, he is able to use it for other applications such as jumping, standing on water, healing wounds, reviving plants, and even limited foresight.
  • Zoom Punch: The Zoom Punch attack involves a Ripple breathing technique that dislocates & stretches the joints in the arm.
  • Ripple Cutter: Zeppeli spits globs of wine from between his teeth. The Ripple combined with the liquid makes it sharp and dense enough to cut through solid objects, as well as agile and accurate enough to deflect other projectiles.
  • Sendo Wave Kick: A Ripple-infused strike with the knee. The Ripple energy tears vampires and Undead apart upon entering the bloodstream.
  • Sunlight Yellow Overdrive: Using the power of sunlight, Zeppeli is able to transfer the Ripple through his body into another being, causing burn damage to zombies and vampires alike.
  • Life Magnetism Overdrive: An ability that allowed Zeppeli and Jonathan to gather forth all the leaves in the immediate area and combine them to create a much larger leaf (used as a hang glider) using the body's natural magnetic field and conductivity.
  • Tornado Overdrive: Zeppeli leaps into the air and points his legs towards his opponent. From here, he is able to move the Ripple to his lower half and essentially dive bomb the opponent in a spinning motion, much like a drill.
  • Ultimate Deep Pass Overdrive: Zeppeli's last and most powerful Ripple technique. Hee transfers all his life energy into Jonathan. Using this technique, Jonathan obtains all of Zeppeli's power - causing his strength, agility, and Ripple technique to increase dramatically.

Robert E. O. Speedwagon
Speedwagon is a major ally of Jonathan Joestar. He couldn't master the Ripple because he wasn't pressured enough. However, due to his life on the street, he is fairly resourceful and has mastered several useful techniques, including the ability to determine someone's moral alignment purely based on their smell. Speedwagon is a seasoned mugger, thus he knows the basics of combat such as keeping a good guard.
  • Saw-Hat: Speedwagon wore a bowler hat with a hidden buzz-saw built into it that was sharp enough to cut through bone.
  • Hammer: He used a sledgehammer powerful enough to kill zombies in just one strike by smashing their heads.

Erina Pendleton
Erina is a young girl from Jonathan Joestar's hometown, who becomes his love interest and she eventually becomes his wife which now makes her Erina Joestar, the mother to George Joestar II and the grandmother/guardian to Joseph Joestar.

George Joestar
George is Jonathan Joestar's father and, after a tragic misunderstanding, adopts Dio Brando in his family, kickstarting the events of the series. He is kind, though somewhat misguided. He also loves his son, but is strict towards him, especially after Dio came along which offered George someone to compare Jonathan with, as he wished to make a gentleman out of him.

Tonpetty
Tonpetty is a Ripple master who trained Will Anthonio Zeppeli as well as Straizo and Dire. As a Ripple master, Tonpetty has trained multiple people in the art of the Ripple. He is the only character shown to be able to predict the future of someone just by touching their hands, displaying a high level of skill. His students demonstrated multiple techniques as a result of their training with Tonpetty, including the ability to heal others.

Dire
Dire is a Hamon disciple under the Hamon Master Tonpetty, and is a very close friend of Will Anthonio Zeppeli. He is portrayed as a fierce but honorable Ripple User and fighter. He has shown incredible mastery of Hamon. He has complete control of his body and its speed, to the point of making enemies view him as blurred when moving. He manipulates his speed to look slower than he actually is, a technique to make enemies over-confident and eventually lower their guard. He also is able to infuse objects with the Hamon and can use it, oddly enough, after getting decapitated.
  • Thunder Split Attack: Dire jumps at his opponents and does a split with their arms. He then attacks their neck with a chop so fast he would even be able to put objects on them without anyone noticing.
  • Thunder Cross Split Attack: Dire's best attack. This is an advanced version of the Thunder Split Attack that covers its weakness by making his arms form a cross. It is described as a perfect technique in both attack and defense.

Straizo
Straizo is a minor ally of Jonathan Joestar in Phantom Blood and an antagonist in Battle Tendency. First a Ripple master, Straizo later becomes a Vampire to gain eternal youth. Straizo was a skilled human trained in the art of the Ripple on his own, capable of channeling ripples through solid objects to destroy multiple zombies.

Poco
Poco is originally mind-controlled and used as bait by Dio Brando, he joins the Joestar Group on their quest, in order to save his sister. Poco is introduced as a mischievous and cowardly boy who steals the group's supplies. But later he was shown to be brave, willing to risk his life to help the group. He also worries about his sister, who has been taken captive by Dio.
