Weapons & Transportation In Avatar

A wide range of weapons and transportation are found in the world, varying in quality, size, and usage among the four nations. For the list of Weapons and transportation used in the world of Avatar, please refers to the description below:

Swamp Skiff
These are small, canoe-like crafts that swamp folks use to travel around the swamp. The swamp folks use Waterbending to propel the skiffs and long poles to guide them through the waterways of the swamp. Swamp folks use these boats to hunt, fish, and travel around their watery environment.

Fire Nation Trebuchet
These catapults are used by the Fire Nation to conduct long-range warfare. Manned by imposing, muscle-bound Trebuchet Operators and capable of launching flaming munitions over great distance, these weapons have become the scourge of city walls throughout the world of Avatar.

Large Earth Coins
These people-sized round coins are used as weapons by Earthbenders. Because they are made out of Earth, Earthbenders are able to bend them, spinning and rolling them at their opponents. Inspired from actual Earth Kingdom coins, these weapons are very useful on the battlefield. The coins can be lined up side by side to make a defensive (and mobile) wall or stacked to make an impromptu lookout tower. Skilled Earthbenders can use these coins as a vehicle and “ride” in the hole in the middle of the coins.

Ships
The Northern Water Tribe’s most common ship is a double-hulled vessel that can be used for a variety of things. Its small size easily fits in the canals of the tribe but its main purpose is to be used for short, open ocean trips. Powered by Waterbending, the ship was designed to withstand even the worst ocean conditions. And although the ship is not made for long voyages, it has been used on more than one occasion to travel over a thousand miles. Warriors use this ship to patrol and protect the waters outside the Northern Water Tribe, and fishermen like its large deck, ideal for carrying loads of fish and sea prunes. Another Waterbending-powered vessel of the Northern Water Tribe is the gondola boat. This small boat was designed for the calm waters of the Northern Water Tribe canals and is used mainly for transporting people throughout the city.

Slime bombs, stink bombs, smoke bombs
Originally developed for trying to rid certain parts of the temple of a rat infestation, these bombs were also very helpful in fighting off the Fire Nation. The slime bombs explode a green, sticky ooze – enough of which can immobilize an entire tank. The smoke bombs release smoke, making it impossible to see what’s going on, and the stink bombs… well they just smell really bad. No normal human can stand it.

Hot Air Balloon
This is an experimental weapon that the Mechanist developed for the Fire Nation. It is a primitive version of a hot air balloon. The Mechanist had difficulty trouble figuring out how to control the balloon, but with Sokka’s help, they finally got it working. The key was creating a small valve in the top of the balloon that allows the pilot to control the hot air, thereby controlling the up and down movement of the balloon.

The Gliders
These are bi-plane like contraptions that fly in the air. They do not use an engine or Airbending to fly them; instead they are designed to glide on the air currents, a lot like a kite. Like just about everything at the temple, they were designed by the mechanist. He came up with the idea when he saw pictures of Airbenders and found the old Airbender gliders lying around the temple. He modified these gliders and made it possible for non-Airbenders to use them.

Whale’s tooth scimitar
This is a common Southern Water Tribe weapon made from the tooth of a whale. While this weapon looks very primitive it is quite deadly. Its small, mobile size is a perfect for close range combat.

Poison Knife
Allegedly found on the old Fire Nation civilian that Jet roughs up, this knife has a compartment for poison in the handle. Most likely the invention of an assassin, the knife delivers a double dose of pain – from the poison as well as the stab wound.

Blasting Jelly
A highly explosive jelly-like substance used by the Fire Nation in blasting out mountains. This is the TNT of the Avatar world, and has been used to clear many roads and mine shafts.

Jet Skis
Another vehicle in the Fire Nation’s war arsenal, these steam-powered jet skis are perfect for short-range water travel and warfare. They seat two soldiers and travel at very fast speeds.

Tangle mines
Invented by Sokka’s father, Hakoda, tangle mines are made with a bamboo frame and covered with dried animal skin. Inside, the mine is filled with stinkfish and seaweed. These mines float in the water and detonate when a ship hits them. When the mines detonate, they explode seaweed and stinkfish. The seaweed tangles around the propeller of the ship, incapacitating it. Meanwhile, the smell from the stinkfish forces people to abandon ship. Though they are a very unusual mine, they are very effective. Hakoda calls them the stink’n’sink. It’s destructive, buoyant, and terrible smelling.

Rock Gloves
The favored weapons of the Dai Li. Agents wear the rock gloves on their hands and can use them in battle by Earthbending them like a stone punch at an opponent standing across the room, using them to snatch someone from behind without getting close enough to be detected, or locking them like cuffs around a person’s wrists or ankles. Agents can also use their bending to bond them with stone walls, allowing them to climb up like spiders.

Ba Sing Se Monorail
The monorail was the brainchild of Earth King Yi Ming, an ingenious but impatient ruler who was tired of having to spend two full days traveling from one end of his city to the other. He tasked his royal engineers with finding a solution to his traveling woes: “I want a faster traveling way! Make it so.” The result is the best mass-transit system in the entire world. Nobody has public transportation that’s faster, more efficient, or safer. And it’s all powered by Earthbending!

Fire Nation drill
Originally designed by the Mechanist at the Northern Air Temple, this metal drill was created for the sole purpose of penetrating Ba Sing Se. It took Fire Nation laborers over two years to construct. The drill is larger than some villages. It’s so big that it actually houses an entire brigade of Fire Nation engineers, who are needed to make repairs and clean out the pipelines. Several metal support beams connect the protective outer shell of the drill to its engine inside. As the drill digs into an earthen structure, the rock is chewed up and turned into slurry, a disgusting mixture of rock and water that is dispensed into pipes and dumped out of the rear of the drill.

Ferry
This is a large boat that ferries refugees from one side of the lake to the other. The ferries take about a day to cross the lake and, unfortunately for the refugees, the food on the ferries is usually not that good- just some rotten meat and moldy bread. The ferry has an upper deck, where the captain and his men control the ship (and eat like kings) and also a lower deck that is crowded with refugees.

Sand-sailors
The main form of transportation used by the Sandbenders, sand-sailors look very similar to catamarans. They have runners that slide across the sand and sails to catch the wild, hot desert winds. The Sandbender pilots use their bending to help steer and propel the sailors. While not ideal for transporting large amounts of cargo or great numbers of people, the sand-sailors are agile, handle nimbly, and can traverse great expanses of desert wasteland quickly and with minimal effort.

Tank Train
The tank-train is a Fire Nation engineering marvel- it is a cross between a tank and a train. By using the concept of their tanks and building upon it, the Fire Nation was able to make a vehicle powerful enough to go virtually anywhere and large enough to carry all sort of bad Fire Nation things. The tank-train is the size of a regular train and consists of several cars- the first car is the work-horse, it houses the engine of the vehicle which runs on coal and steam or Firebending. The tank-train can often be spotted from miles away because of the plumes of smoke bellowing from its engines. The first car also has a functional design  the sharp, armored front is used to cut a path through any obstacles. The next two cars are for hauling things  these cars can be added and removed when needed.

Southern Raider Ships
Smaller and faster than the traditional Fire Nation ships, the Raider’s ships are perfect for attacking coastal villages. Their smaller size and improved maneuverability allow the ships to pull up close to the shore and surprise the enemy.

Fire Nation Airships
Developed from the same technology that created the Mechanist’s war balloon, the airships are bigger and more destructive then their flying cousins. The airships hold over 50 crew and Firebenders, are equipped with a bomb bay, and are able to fly very far distances. Catwalks hang off the belly of the airships where harnessed Firebenders can shoot at the enemy below. The invasion forces don’t stand a chance against this powerful, flying force.

Ice Torpedo
This is another Mechanist invention that was added to the submarine. He designed a torpedo made of ice, but had a hard time figuring out how to keep the fuse lit underwater. After a couple of tests, the Mechanist came up with the following solution: Blasting jelly is poured into a hollowed out section of the torpedo. The fuse is lit and water is frozen over the whole thing, covering the jelly and lit fuse. The weapon could then be launched into the water by Waterbending. When it makes contact with its target, it explodes.

Waterbending-Powered Submarine
Sokka came up with the concept for these underwater vehicles, but it was the Mechanist who turned this idea into reality. At first, the Mechanist had a hard time figuring out Sokka’s original blueprint, which looked more like a smiling whale-dolphin. But eventually, the Mechanist figured it out. The result is a waterproof vessel that propels through the ocean and sinks and floats with the help of Waterbenders. There was only one problem that couldn’t be fixed. The subs have a limited air supply. As a result, the subs have to resurface frequently for air.

Earthbending-Powered Tanks
Piloted by 4 Earthbenders, each tank is multi-segmented, allowing it to navigate on uneven terrain. Also, hatches on the side of the tank open and close, allowing Earthbenders to shoot rocks at the enemy. The Mechanist consulted several Earthbenders on how to perfect this vehicle.
