All Notable Characters In Avatar

This features a list of notable characters from the anime Avatar: The Last Airbender. The following list is completed with description as shown below:

Swamp monster/ Huu
This large, scary creature looks like the swamp come to life. Covered in vines and other swamp stuff, this swamp monster is really just a man named Huu. Huu is a Waterbender who is able to bend the water inside the vines and plants and use them to cover his body, making him look like the swamp monster. As the swamp monster, Huu is able to protect the swamp- scaring away any potentially harmful people. But any friend of the swamp is a friend of Huu. Huu shows Aang how everything in the swamp is connected and helps Aang to find Appa and Momo.

Due and Tho
These are two of many swamp folks living in the swamp. While neither of them is all that bright, Tho is less dim. Originally from the Southern Water Tribe, Due and Tho are both Waterbenders. Their ancestors migrated from the Water Tribe thousands of years ago and found these swamps. Because of all the water in the swamp, the Waterbenders felt at home and decided to stay. The swamp folks are often considered strange because of what they eat (like possum chicken and giant bugs) and how they talk with funny accents.

Yung, the Resistance Leader
This is the leader of the Omashu resistance that is secretly fighting the Fire Nation from within the city. Yung is a gung-ho Earthbender who is willing to die rather than turn Omashu over to the Fire Nation. Yung used to be the Captain of King Bumi’s army, but on the day of the invasion, Bumi ordered him not to fight, but to surrender. He is a very pragmatic, battle-oriented Earthbender, who doesn’t understand Bumi’s crazy military strategies. Yung continues to lead the resistance, planning attacks and trying to remove the city’s rulers from power, in hopes of driving the Fire Nation out and reclaiming Omashu for his people.

Ty Lee
Ty Lee is a bubbly girl and an amazing acrobat who travels around the world performing with the Fire Nation circus. She also attended the Royal Fire Academy for girls where she, Mai, and Azula became best friends. After completing school, Ty Lee joined the circus where she became the main attraction. People travel for miles to watch Ty Lee perform her high wire act. Ty Lee is very “in touch” with the universe. She can tell your mood by looking at your aura or feeling your chi. In addition to being a great acrobat, she is also a great fighter- along with her flexibility, balance, and acrobatic maneuvers, Ty Lee has a rare fighting talent: Chi-blocking. By striking a bender’s pressure points, she is able to block people’s chi and take away their bending for a short amount of time.

Mai
The daughter of Omashu’s reigning Fire Nation governor, Mai is a depressed-looking goth teen, seemingly bored with everything. Mai is fifteen, and one of Azula’s best friends since they were kids. Like Azula, Mai grew up as royalty in the Fire Nation and attended the Royal Fire Academy for girls. Mai is not a Firebender, but she is an awesome warrior.

Chong
This scruffy-looking Earth Kingdom nomad is an optimistic world traveler. He loves nothing more than playing his guitar and singing songs with his fellow nomads. Chong is the de facto leader of the nomads, though he would claim that his group has no leader. Chong and the nomads travel the world together. They don’t use maps and rarely have an actual destination  they just “go where the wind takes them.” Chong’s instrument of choice is the pipa, a pear-shaped, guitar-like instrument.

General Fong
Considered one of the most aggressive officers in the Earth Kingdom army, General Fong is a powerful Earthbender who is well known for his unusual tactics. Starting as an enlisted man over 25 years ago, Fong originally fought against the Fire Nation on the front lines where his “no fear” attitude won him high praises from his superiors. Fong worked his way up the ranks, eventually becoming an officer. He was different from the other officers, having a less formal education, but this set him apart and helped him on his path to becoming a general. Because General Fong started at such a low rank, the men under his command consider him one of their own and they are extremely loyal to him.

Chief Arnook
Chief Arnook is the 50-year-old leader of the Northern Water Tribe.  He was born and raised at the North Pole and became Chief after his father died more than twenty years ago.  In his younger days, Arnook trained as a warrior.  Though he is not a Waterbender, the other men respected him and he grew to become a great leader.  Chief Arnook married the daughter of a tribal chieftain and together they had a daughter, Yue.   He is a noble, brave leader who always puts the concerns of his citizens first.

Princess Yue
Born in the Northern Water Tribe, 16-year-old Princess Yue is the only child of Chief Arnook and the only person at the North Pole to have white hair. When Princess Yue was born, she was very sick so her father placed her in the Water Tribe oasis and prayed to the Moon spirit to heal her. It was then that her hair turned white and she was healed. Yue believes that the moon spirit saved her life that night. Princess Yue is a very spiritual person and she has a special connection to the spirits of the Water Tribe. She is a very caring person, always putting the needs of her tribe first. Princess Yue is betrothed to marry a Water Tribe warrior, Hahn. Although she doesn’t love him, she believes marrying him is the right thing to do for the sake of her tribe.

War Minister Qin
The cunning and inventive Qin oversees the creation of all the Fire Nation’s war machines. Qin has been a Fire Nation emissary for years and has worked with the Mechanist to create destructive tanks and warships. He also has several secret weapons in the works in an effort to bring an end to the war. And now that he has possession of the mechanist’s war balloon, the Fire Nation could soon control the skies, as well as the land.

Mechanist
Teo’s father is the mastermind behind the reconstruction of the Northern Air Temple. The Mechanist is a kooky old mechanical genius and a man of science and logic, always experimenting with new contraptions and technologies. In this way, he is a lot different from his own son, Teo, who is more spiritual. He has three wooden fingers. Also, a natural gas explosion left him with patchy eyebrows. The mechanist is well-liked leader by the Air Temple citizens, but they don’t know that he is hiding a dark secret: years ago, the Fire Nation came to the Northern Air Temple, looking for signs of the Avatar.  They were going to destroy the temple, but the Mechanist made a deal with them.  If the Fire Nation would let his people live in peace, then he would design weapons for the Fire Lord.  He is not an evil man, just a man who had to make a difficult choice for the good of his people and his son.

Teo
Teo is a thirteen-year-old, handicapped boy who, as Aang says, “has the spirit of an Airbender.” He is adventurous, peaceful, and spiritual. Teo can’t walk, so to get around, he uses a special wheelchair that his dad designed. This wheelchair also transforms into a glider, allowing the earthbound Teo to soar like a bird. Teo is just as comfortable in the sky as he is on the ground and his amazing aerial acrobatics are the envy of all the other glider kids.

Malu the Firebending Magician
Born into a family of magicians, Malu grew up in the circus, touring around the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom. Performing is in his blood. Now, Malu tours with the Fire Days festival, entertaining Fire Nation citizens all over the world. His specialties include juggling fire and turning fireballs into doves. But the trick that made him famous is called “Taming the Dragon,” where he uses Firebending to conjure a large, fire dragon. You might be tempted to ask him how he does his magic, but Malu will tell you that a magician never reveals his secrets.

Jeong Jeong
Once a clean cut, high-ranking general in the Fire Nation, Jeong Jeong was the first person to desert the Fire Nation army – and live. From a very young age, Jeong Jeong’s teachers recognized that he was Firebending prodigy, and through diligent study and practice, he quickly developed into a true master in his teens. In the army, Jeong Jeong taught Firebending to young soldiers, including Zhao. But after many years of watching his students wage war and cause destruction, Jeong Jeong began to question what he was teaching his students. This questioning led him to realize the true nature of Firebending to consume and destroy. Jeong Jeong felt that his Firebending was not a gift, but a burning curse. Ten years ago, he deserted the Fire Nation and vowed never to teach anyone Firebending again.

Master Pakku
This sarcastic, crotchety old man is the best Waterbender in world. He has been training as a Waterbender since before he could stand. He was born to a long line of Waterbending masters and quickly advanced to become a master himself. When Master Pakku is not out with the other Waterbender warriors defending the city, he is busy training Waterbenders, young and old. Master Pakku doesn’t give anyone special treatment, even the Avatar. If you are training with him, you better show up on time, every time and you better pay attention. Master Pakku is not a very patient man and he’s always quick with an insult or to slap you with some water if you’re not focused. Master Pakku is the leader of the Waterbenders and he and his men are the first line of defense for the city.

Bato
Bato is from the Southern Water tribe.  He has been friends with Sokka and Katara’s dad, Hakoda since they were kids. Bato left the tribe over two years ago to fight in the war. He fought bravely in many battles against the Fire Nation. But one night, the Water Tribe warriors were ambushed by a group of Firebenders. Bato was burned badly and couldn’t travel with the other warriors. Hakoda brought him to the abbey, where the sisters took care of him and nursed him back to health. Bato is a loyal and brave warrior who would do anything to protect his tribe.

June
She is a beautiful, yet tough bounty hunter. Of all the bounty hunters in the Avatar world, she is the best and most expensive. Originally from the Earth Kingdom, she spent her childhood traveling with her father who was also a bounty hunter. This is where she learned the tracking and fighting skills she uses today. June will track anyone so long as the price is right. She has no allegiance to any nation, only money. She uses a rare animal to hunt her fugitives, a Shirshu. Her father gave her the Shirshu when she was just a kid and the two grew up together. When June is not out searching for fugitives, she most likely can be found in at the local tavern, arm wrestling or gambling with some ruffians.

The Blue Spirit
This is Zuko’s alter ego, a black clad figure with a haunting blue, metal mask. When Zuko assumes this persona, he does not use Firebending to fight because this would give away his identity. Instead, he uses two broadswords, a skill he has developed during his time at sea. The mask is a traditional Earth Kingdom opera mask, worn by actors.

General Bujing
He is a sinister Fire Nation general who will do anything to win the war, even if it means sacrificing inexperienced troops to gain a battlefield advantage.

Tyro
Haru’s dad. He is an Earthbender who led an unsuccessful rebellion against the Fire Nation several years ago. The Fire Nation arrested Tyro and the other Earthbenders and imprisoned them on a rig in the middle of the ocean. Tyro is still a leader and inspiration to his people.

Haru
Haru is a young, rebellious Earthbender who is forced to hide his Earthbending abilities from the Fire Nation.

King Bumi
He is the one hundred twelve–year–old King of Omashu and a childhood friend of Aang. Although he doesn’t look it at first, King Bumi is actually a powerful Earthbender. He is also a trickster who loves messing with people and playing jokes on them. But he is well respected by the citizens of Omashu

Commander Zhao
A Fire Nation loyalist and an opportunist, Commander Zhao began his career in the Fire Nation Navy as a Firebender. For his loyal service, he was quickly promoted through the ranks and soon became the Captain of his own ship. After a decisive victory against an Earth Kingdom vessel, the Fire Lord rewarded Zhao by promoting him to Commander of the Fire Navy fleet. But Zhao’s sneaky, ambitious nature causes some to question whether his promotion was honorably earned.

Combustion Man
Hired by Zuko to kill the Avatar, Combustion Man is a Firebender with the unique ability to super-heat the air and cause explosions. He does this by focusing and shooting his energy from his tattooed third eye. Combustion Man discovered this ability when he was a young child, but didn’t have any control over it, and one day he accidentally blew off his arm and leg. Now, he has a metal arm and leg in their place. He’s always been a loner and a man of very few words- perfect for his line of work.

Piandao
The greatest sword master and sword maker in Fire Nation History, Piandao was born to two Firebenders. Ashamed that their only son wasn’t a bender, his parents left him on the doorsteps of an orphanage. Growing up, Piandao was a nervous and agitated child, but he showed interest in the arts and enjoyed painting and calligraphy. It helped him relax and focus his mind. At the age of 10, Piandao attended Fire Nation boys’ camp where his natural talent with the sword was recognized. He furthered his studies in the army, where he developed a vicious and fearsome sword fighting style. Piandao fought many battles for the Fire Nation and won them all. But after several years of fighting, Piandao lost his taste for war and wanted to become a more enlightened person. So he left the army and traveled the world for many years, studying under a variety of benders, warriors, and artisans. He then returned to the Fire Nation and settled in the town of Shu Jing. One day, the Fire Nation army came to arrest him for deserting the army. In a legendary battle, Piandao defeated all one hundred soldiers and the army has never bothered him again.

General Mung
General Mung is a heartless man who believes that military needs always outweigh civilian needs. He holds great contempt for the villagers of Jang Hui and often orders his soldiers to take their food and medicine, calling it a “patriotic donation.” He takes great pride in being part of the Fire Nation “war machine” and one day hopes to serve on the front lines in the Earth Kingdom.

Celestial Avatar Spirit Aang
This colossal figure represents Aang’s mastery of the Avatar State. Aang encounters this giant version of himself in space during his meditation on the seventh chakra (pure cosmic energy.) The first time he meditates, (in 2.19) Aang has a vision of Katara in trouble and has to abandon his celestial twin. The second time he meditates, (in 2.20) Aang is interrupted when Azula shoots him with lightning. In both cases, Aang is unable to clear the chakra and master the Avatar State.

Crystal Armor Aang
Aang creates a protective suit of crystal to protect himself from Azula’s vicious attacks during the battle in the crystal catacombs. This Earthbending move is great for defense, especially against fire. It’s not as effective for offensive moves, since it limits the practitioners range of motion. Aang also creates a Crystal cocoon to protect himself from Azula and Zuko. Inside the cocoon, Aang meditates and enters the Avatar State.

Hakoda
Katara and Sokka’s dad is the leader of the Southern Water Tribe men. He exemplifies bravery and wisdom and all his warriors look up to him and respect him. He is a loving father and the bond between Hakoda and his children is strong, even now that they’re apart. Hakoda is a talented ship and igloo builder and weapons maker; much of Sokka’s ingenuity and craftiness he learned from his father. Hakoda recognized Katara’s Waterbending abilities when she was young and encouraged her to develop them. He even traveled around the South Pole, looking for a Waterbender to train his daughter, but could not find one. Hakoda knows that Katara’s Waterbending is one of the keys to rebuilding their tribe. Hakoda’s decision to leave his children behind and fight in the war was a difficult choice. But it was his wisdom that allowed him to see the big picture  if his tribe didn’t help win the war, it would have no future.

Guru Pathik
At 150 years old, Guru Pathik is probably the oldest person in the Avatar world- he’s even older than King Bumi! Though not a bender, he is spiritually enlightened and has helped numerous benders (and animals!) throughout the years attain their full potential and clear their pain and suffering. He does this by helping them clear their chakras, or pools of energy. He practices yoga and meditation every day, which is why he is so flexible and has lived for so long. He also has an excellent sense of humor, but if you try to joke around during meditation, he will quickly get you back on task. When he was younger, Guru Pathik was a personal friend of the Airbenders and Monk Gyatso. Because Guru Pathik is connected to all the energy in the universe, he knew the Avatar had returned when Aang emerged from the iceberg in an explosion of cosmic energy

General How
As leader of the Council of Five, General How is a longtime veteran of the war with the Fire Nation. Although his primary duty is to protect and guard the outer wall of Ba Sing Se, he is also involved with the Earth Kingdom’s war effort outside the wall. He provides resources, troops, and intelligence to the Generals located in other bases throughout the Earth Kingdom. A man of honor and courage, General How is proud to serve his kingdom in their ongoing war against the Fire Nation, though he is conflicted about the fact that the war remains a secret from the Earth King.

Earth King
The most powerful ruler in the Earth Kingdom, his palace sits in the center of Ba Sing Se. The current Earth King has never journeyed outside the Palace walls and knows next to nothing about what happens in the outside world. His main interest is in collecting rare animals from around the world, which are brought to him by zoological expeditions sent out from the University of Ba Sing Se.

Joo Dee
Trained by the Cultural Authority of Ba Sing Se (the Dai Li) to be a guide for important visitors to the city. Her robotic, cheery demeanor, mechanical mannerisms, and tendency to hold the party line when talking about the official political practices of Ba Sing Se are the result of brainwashing by the Dai Li, under orders from their commander, Long Feng. In general, she exists to neutralize unwanted outside influences.

Long Feng
The leader of the Dai Li and the de facto leader of Ba Sing Se, Long Feng is a power-hungry, manipulative advisor to the Earth King. As the war with the Fire Nation spread and refugees began pouring into Ba Sing Se in greater and greater numbers, Long Feng decided to keep all information relating to the war away from the Earth King, thereby appointing himself the sole dictator in matters relating to international affairs.

General Sung
This Earth Kingdom officer is the man in charge of protecting the wall, and the man the kids run to with warnings of the Fire Nation drill. General Sung was promoted to general very recently, and is hilariously unqualified to defend Ba Sing Se. An eloquent speaker but a poor commanding officer, General Sung will try to talk his way out of most problems and leave the real work to those who know what they’re doing.

Ghashiun
Sha-Mo’s son who rides around the Si Wong desert on his sand-sailor with his gang of friends, getting into trouble and stealing anything that isn’t well guarded. Since his mother, Yulduz, died of skin cancer, Ghashiun has been somewhat adrift emotionally. Unfortunately, his relationship with his father is distant at best, and Ghashiun’s lying and stealing only compound the rift.

Sha-Mo
A Sandbender who has spent his life in the Si Wong desert and is a master of survival in that harsh environment. A hard, grizzled man of few words, Sha-Mo is proud of his Sandbender heritage and quick to anger when faced with the preconceptions that outsiders often have about Sandbenders: that they’re thieves and bandits that prey on anyone traveling through the desert.

Xin Fu
He is the promoter of the Earth Rumble tournaments and also the host. He is a large, tough-looking Earthbender who was once an Earthbending wrestler himself. But unlike most of the other wrestlers, Xin Fu is very business savvy. He is always looking for another way to make money.

The Boulder
He is one of the best Earthbending fighters in the Earth Rumble tournament. While his style of fighting is less extravagant than the other fighters, he is still amazing to watch. His straight-forward, powerful Earthbending skills are seemingly impossible to beat. The boulder has a cool badger mole tattoo on his back and he always talks about himself in the third person. He can often be heard saying things like: “The Boulder is going to win this in a landslide!”

Dai Li
An instructor working for Long Feng to brainwash new Joo Dees and get them ready for service as instruments of propaganda. He drills the Joo Dees over and over in charm, poise, and the dissemination of the Dai Li party line. He was picked for the assignment because of his dazzling smile, which is the model for the perma-grin of every Joo Dee that rolls off the assembly line.

The Melonlord
Sokka makes this dummy replica of the Firelord to help Aang prepare for his showdown with Ozai. Momo is a big fan of the Melonlord’s delicious melon head because it is sweet and juicy.

Yon Rah
The retired commander of the Southern Raiders who led the group when they attacked the South Pole. Charged by the Firelord to get rid of all the Waterbenders there, he was tricked by Katara’s mother into believing that she was a Waterbender. He executed her on the spot, not realizing that young Katara would be tracking him down nearly a decade later. Yon Rha is a gutless coward who lives a thoroughly dissatisfying life with his hateful mother.

Chit Sang
A big, vicious, prisoner in his mid-30s. He claims that he was wrongly accused of the crime he committed and maintains his innocence. Many see Chit Sang as the unofficial prison leader. If he wants them to jump, they jump. Chit Sang has tried every escape plan he could think of, but none has worked. Since his last attempt, he’s just been biding his time and waiting for a perfect escape opportunity to come.

Sun Warrior Chief
The Chief has been head of the Sun Warrior tribe for over twenty years. His followers appreciate his adherence to traditions as well as his subtle sense of humor. The Chief’s main goal is to keep his tribe secret and protected. He is aware how valuable the dragons are to the world and he wants to keep them safe.

Older Haru
Since Aang and the gang last saw Haru, he’s liberated many Earth Kingdom villages. He’s also grown a very handsome mustache.

Hama
The only known Southern Waterbender in existence besides Katara. Captured many years ago in a Fire Nation raid of the South Pole, Hama was held captive and tortured for decades before she finally escaped. In order to get away from her tormentors, Hama developed the ability to “Bloodbend,” that is, to control the water in another person’s body. Although she seems sweet a first, she harbors an extreme hatred of all Fire Nation citizens and will to use any means necessary to punish them for her mistreatment in the war.
