5 Bending Art Techniques In Avatar

Bending is the ability to manipulate an element. There are five known bending art, four of them bend a specific element while the fifth bends the energy within the human body. The four elemental bending arts are based on the four elements, water, earth, fire, and air. Each element is associated with a particular nation in the world; the Water Tribe corresponds with waterbending, the Earth Kingdom with earthbending, the Fire Nation with firebending, and the Air Nomads with airbending. 

Airbending 
Airbending is the aerokinetic ability to control and manipulate air. The first airbenders learned their art from the flying bison. Airbending is notable for being almost purely defensive, as well as the most dynamic of the four bending arts. 

Airbending abilities 
Air ball: A compressed ball of air for levitating small objects or trapping opponents. 
Air blast: A jet of compressed air shot from the hands, feet, or mouth. 
Air bomb: A powerful air current which completely blows away anything within its radius. 
Air cushion: A cushion out of air to break anyone's fall. 
Air funnel: A cannon by creating a small air funnel with coal projectiles 
Air manipulation: Allows for wind-based counter-attacks, gusts of wind, miniature tornadoes and cyclones. 
Air punch/kick: Compressed formations of air that can be fired off the fists or feet. 
Air shield: Changing direction when attacked and evading by physical movement. 
Air swipe: A wave of compressed air capable of deflecting colossal projectiles. 
Air wheel: Air is rapidly spun around and carries the person inside the wheel of air. 
Breath of wind: Similar to the standard air jet, but created from the mouth and lungs. 
Enhanced agility: Makes airbenders naturally flexible and agile, and difficult to hit. 
Enhanced speed: Run swiftly by decreasing air resistance and even sprint by generating a wind current to propel forward. 
Heat regulation: Warm the body using proper breathing techniques. 
Suction: A technique used to bring people or objects toward the airbender. 

Airbending master level 
Air blades: A slicing air current that can cut through stone or timber. 
Air cocoon: Rotate while jumping to wrap the body in a cocoon of wind. 
Air propulsion: Propel the body forward at great speed by negating the effect of wind resistance. 
Air spout: Levitate the body off the ground and remain in the air for long duration. 
Air vortex: A spinning air which can be used to trap opponents and to deflect any objects. 
Air wake: Shoot a blast of highly compressed air shaped like the user's body at a target. 
Asphyxiation: Suffocate the enemy by forming a ball of air around the head. 
Levitation: Control air to form a cloud under the feet and surf through the air. 
Tornado: A spiraling air current which can be used to travel at high speeds. 

Avatar level airbending 
Air sphere: A sphere of air to hover for extended periods of time or fly at high speeds. 
Strong winds: Unleash an extremely powerful winds 
Tornadoes/hurricanes: Create massive tornadoes and hurricanes at will. 

Special techniques 
Air scooter: A spherical ball of air that can be ridden balancing on it like a top. 
Cloud manipulation: Easily manipulate clouds into various shapes. 
Hypersensitivity: Detect approaching threats which gives a split-second increase in reaction time. 
Flight: Being able to fly without an aid and grants the practitioner more stability and freedom in the sky. 
Gliding: Use a glider for mid-range flight. 
Spiritual projection: Capable of projecting their spirits into other locations. 

Waterbending 
Waterbending is the hydrokinetic ability to control water in all of its various forms. This type of bending is used by the people of the Water Tribe. Waterbenders deal with the flow of energy which let their defense become their offense, turning their opponents' own forces against them. 

Waterbending abilities 
Breath of ice: Use the water vapor in breath to rapidly freeze objects or opponents. 
Ice blade: Create a sword-like blade of ice. 
Ice bullets: Rapidly shoot shards of ice at their opponents. 
Ice claws: Drawing water around fingers and freezing it. 
Ice column: Shoot a pillar of ice up from the ground to knock opponents off their feet. 
Ice creeper: Send a ray of ice on the ground, speeding at an opponent to freeze them. 
Ice disc: Create a cylindrical column of ice and send them at an opponent. 
Ice gauntlet: Freeze water around hands and turn it into a sharp spike that can be used to impale opponent. 
Ice hook: Form a hook out of ice which can be used to climb vertical surfaces. 
Ice line: Create lines of twisting ice columns to knock out opponents. 
Ice shield: Creating a shield of ice. 
Ice spear: Freezing a stream of water into a spike and firing it at the intended target. 
Iceberg spike: Shoot small shards of ice at opponent. 
Phase change: Alter the physical state of the water, between liquid, solid and gas, at will. 
Streaming the water: Draws water from a source that waterbenders move around their bodies 
Water bullet: Sends a large amount of water in a forceful blow toward target. 
Water cloak: Use water as a form of armor with tentacle-like arms. 
Water filtering: Purify polluted water. 
Water jet: High-pressure jets that can be used to force opponents back. 
Water knife: Shape water into a super-sharp edge, enabling to cut through metal, wood and stone. 
Water manipulation: Moving and shaping a body of water to the waterbender's desire. 
Water pressure manipulation: Use water to grasp other objects or cut through. 
Water wall/water shield: Mold water into a variety of shapes and can be used to deflect an attack, trap opponents, or solidified into a shield of ice. 
Water whip: Creating a lashing tendril of water to swipe at an opponent. 
Wave: Create waves of nearly any size. 

Waterbending master level 
Bubble: Cross large bodies of water by creating a bubble, maintaining a supply of air for their journey. 
Ice dome: Surround a foe in a sphere of water and freeze it, trapping opponent inside. 
Ice drill: Control massive amounts of water into a spiraled frozen drill. 
Ice floor: Cover a large area of the ground with ice, trapping enemies' feet in ice. 
Ice ladder: This technique can be used for quick scaling of vertical surfaces. 
Ice prison: This technique covers an opponent in a prison made of ice. 
Ice ramp: Manipulate ice as a means of short transportation. 
Ice sled: Craft a sled out of ice and propel it forward with bending at high speed. 
Ice tunneling: Swim through thick ice with the same ease as through water. 
Maelstrom: Create a gigantic whirlpool. 
Mist-stepping: Use tiny pillars of ice to quickly scale a building. 
Multiple water whips: Inflict a large amount of damage by using four or five whips of water. 
Octopus form: A body of water with multiple whip-like limbs which can be used to grasp or strike an opponent. 
Partial ice whip: Freeze the opposite end in order to trap their opponent and pull them in closer. 
Razor rings: Create multiple simultaneous water rings capable of cutting. 
Water ball: Trap their opponent in a ball of water. 
Water boxing: Surrounds the fist with a small amount of water and punches opponent. 
Water dome: Collect water from the rain, forming a dome that can be used for both offense and defense. 
Water drill: A high-pressure, rotating column of water which capable of drilling a solid surface. 
Water gimbal: Create two rotating rings of water which has both defensive and offensive capabilities. 
Water pinwheel: Moving a large mass of water and spinning it vertically. 
Water ring: Create a ring of water around the body which can be used for both defense and offense. 
Water spout: Controlling a whirlpool, rotating it and directing its movements at the same time. 

Avatar level waterbending 
Ice fissure: Split frozen ground by bending the water mixed with the earth. 
Remote waterbending: Use waterbending from distances. 
Tsunami: Creating and controlling water bodies including causing massive tsunamis, at will. 
Water compression: Compress water volume, compacting several thousands of gallons into a small volume. 

Special techniques 
Armless waterbending: Control water without the use of limbs, relying only on the torso to generate enough movement to manipulate a medium. 
Bloodbending: Allows a bender to manipulate large volumes of water in human. 
Cloud manipulation: Manipulate clouds which are made of air and water to create various shapes. 
Condensation: Condense invisible water vapor right out of the air. 
Healing: Heal injuries by redirecting energy paths, or chi, throughout the body, using water as a catalyst. 
Plantbending: Control and manipulate every form of plant life. 
Solutions: Manipulate any mass of liquid consisting of some water. 
Spiritbending: Project human souls in the Spirit World with water. 
Steam manipulation: Manipulate steam and fog which can be used to freeze people or objects or to create cover. 
Water run: Run on water at high speeds. 

Earthbending 
Earthbending is the geokinetic ability to manipulate earth and rock in all their various forms. Oma and Shu were the first earthbenders to learn this art from the badgermoles. Earthbenders generally endure their enemies' attacks until the right opportunity to counterattack reveals itself. 

Earthbending Abilities
Earth and stone levitation: Levitating nearby pieces of earth and stone and propelling them at foes. 
Earth block: Bring up blocks of earth and launch them at the enemies. 
Earth column: Forcing columns of rock out of the ground and shooting a stream of small ruts and protrusions from underground at opponent. 
Earth compression: Compress large rock into smaller one or to compress smaller chunks into one big piece of rock. 
Earth gauntlet: Throw back opponents with hard solid force. 
Earth hand/mannequin: Craft replicas of human bodies from any rock source 
Earth launch: Quickly move rock and launch them several tens of feet into the air. 
Earth material manipulation: Manipulate coal, gems, crystals, and other earth-based materials, like meteorites and jennamite. 
Earth shelter: Create a shelter or dome which can provide instant shelter in the wilderness. 
Earth sinking: Sink opponents into the ground and suffocate them in earth. 
Earth smash: Destroy rocks and boulders with punches and kicks. 
Earth wall: Create walls of earth, which can be used for both defense and offense. 
Earthquakes/fissures: Striking the ground which creates earthquakes or to throw opponents off-balance. 
Ground shift: Alter the ground beneath others to move them out of their way. 
Quicksand: Turn certain surfaces to quicksand to immobilize an enemy. 
Rock cuff: Make cuffs out of rock to immobilize opponents. 
Rock hanging: Attach to other stone surfaces and remain off the ground for long periods of time. 
Rock shield: A levitated rock as a shield when positioned in front of a bender. 
Rock slide: Cause many rocks to rain down on opponent. 
Sand spout: Manipulate the sand to form a whirling column. 
Slab shackles: Bind an opponent's arms with triangle-shaped slabs. 
Water filtering: Purify polluted water. 

Earthbending master level 
Dust cloud: Create dust clouds of various sizes to provide cover. 
Dust-stepping: creating very thin pillars of increasing size. 
Earth armor: Mold rocks, dust, pebbles, or crystals to fit the body and create armor. 
Earth bomb: Sending a rock toward the ground which can cause massive damage. 
Earth tunneling: Move through the earth by opening tunnels. 
Earth wave: Create a wave of earth to ride on and use it as a form of transportation. 
Earth writing: Manipulate pebbles to spell out messages for others to read. 
Magnetization: Magnetizing the limbs to any type of stone. 
Remote earthbending: Focus energies and bend that earth out of physical reach. 

Avatar level earthbending 
Compressed rock bullets: Shot compressed rocks with great speed like a machine gun. 
Dust devil: Raise the body high above ground level through dust devils. 
Enhanced earth armor: Surround the body with large pieces of earth to use in combat. 
Enhanced earth levitation: Move hill-sized statues at will. 
Powered compression: Compress boulder rocks into smaller rocks which are directed to orbit the bender until they are used. 
Tectonics: Earthbend on a scale vast enough to move entire landmasses. 

Special Techniques 
Directional geomancy: A ritual used by earthbending masters in order to identify an Avatar. 
Lavabending: Melting the earth into lava for more versatility in battle. 
Metalbending: Locate the small fragments of earth in metal and utilize them to bend the metal. 
Mudbending: Bend mud due to the presence of earth within. 
Rock gloves: Cover the hands in small rocks and project them at a target as small projectiles. 
Rock shoes: Shoes made out of earth to slide to travel faster and to cling to walls. 
Sandbending: Easily bending sand. 
Seismic sense: Sense vibrations through the ground which allows for a 360-degree field of vision. 

Firebending 
Firebending is the pyrokinetic ability to control fire. It draws the power from the sun, and the first human firebenders derived their firebending techniques from the dragons. Firebending is known for its intense and aggressive attacking style and general lack of adequate defensive moves. 

Firebending abilities 
Blazing rings and arcs: Create rings and arcs to slice evasive targets. 
Blocking fire: Extinguish an oncoming fire blast by using a kick, jab, or any other defensive maneuver. 
Fire blade: Create blades of fire to slice through objects without completely destroying them. 
Fire bomb: Create a flame at the end of a limb and thrust the flame down in an explosive burst. 
Fire circle: Create a circle of fire and suspend it in the air for an extended period of time. 
Fire daggers: Jets which are created from the fist or fingertips to use as close range melee attacks. 
Fire lashes: Create a long lash of fire and bring it down on enemies. 
Fire-stepping: Using bursts of flames beneath the feet which can quickly scale buildings. 
Fire streams: Shoot continuous streams of fire from fingertips, fists, palms, or legs. 
Fire whip: An extension of a fire stream which can be utilized as a whip. 
Fireballs or "Fire-jabs": Jabs and punches produce miniature fireballs and missiles of flame. 
Flame redirection: Changing the course of an incoming fire blast and redirecting it back at the attacker. 
Shield of fire: Creates a protective shield of fire that can deflect attacks and explosions. 
The Dancing Dragon: A very powerful firebending form. 

Firebending master level 
Charged attacks: Charging attacks before releasing them in order to create enormous blasts of fire. 
Fire augmentation: Control the size and intensity of any nearby flames and can draw them in to manipulate them at will. 
Fire comet: Pressurizes the fire into a ball and shoots it toward the enemy. 
Fire missiles: Shoot long streams of fire that follow the target as they move. 
Fire pinwheel: A whirling disk of flame, capable of being used at long range. 
Intertwined fire stream: Directs two powerful fire streams at the opponent 
Jet propulsion: Conjure huge flame to propel at high speeds on the ground or through the air. 
Pressurized fire stream: A more powerful form of the fire stream achieved by pressurizing the fire before it is released. 
Wall of flames: Wall of concentrated flames acts as a barrier to incoming attacks. 

Avatar level firebending 
Long-range multiple fire whips: Produce fire whips, the most being five at once. 

Special techniques 
Blue fire: Ability to bend completely blue flames which are hotter than the orange flames. 
Breath of fire: Warm the body with firebending and breathing control. 
Combustionbending: Concentrate the energy through a third eye to project a ray of heat which detonates with great force. 
Dragon fire: The dragons unleashed a vortex of fire with several colors. 
Energy reading: Using fire to sense chi paths and interpret spiritual energy. 
Fire breathing: Firebending out of mouth, mixing air from the lungs with the flame, creating a powerful blast. 
Heat control: The ability to control heat. 

Lightningbending 
Lightning generation: The ability to generate and direct lightning. 
Lightning redirection: Redirect the course of lightning strikes by absorbing it through one arm, guiding it through the stomach, and out the other arm. 

Energybending 
Energybending is the ability to bend another person's life energy. It predates the four main bending arts, the formation of the four nations, as well as the creation of the Avatar. 

Energybending Abilities
Astral projection: Create an astral projection of spirit. 
Granting bending: The ability to bestow an individual with the power of bending 
Removing bending: The ability to remove a person's bending permanently 
Spirit energy manipulation: The ability to manipulate energy originating from the Spirit World.
