Supporting Characters In SpongeBob Squarepants
In addition to the ten main characters, SpongeBob SquarePants features a variety of recurring secondary characters. Here is the list of them:
Mermaid Man Ernie, better known by his superhero name Mermaid Man, is a semi-retired superhero who lives in Bikini Bottom. He and his sidekick Barnacle Boy are the stars of a show-within-a-show called The Adventures of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, but they are also real superheroes within the SpongeBob SquarePants universe. The two are now very old and currently reside at Shady Shoals Rest Home. However, their two biggest fans, SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star, convinced them to come out of retirement.
Barnacle Boy Tim, better known by his superhero name Barnacle Boy, is the sidekick of Mermaid Man. He is a superhero and a parody of both Aqualad and Robin. He is said to be 68 years old. As the younger of the duo, he is more sane and self-aware than Mermaid Man. However, Barnacle Boy is also more cranky. He often calls Mermaid Man an old coot. Despite being a senior citizen, Barnacle Boy is still treated like a child by his mentor, much to his disdain.
Flying Dutchman The Flying Dutchman proves to be anything but a friendly ghost. Though his role in the series is to be the devil of the sea, he constantly varies from a sea demon to a restless soul or even as a psychopompic judge to the dead. Despite his antisocial behavior and malevolence, the Flying Dutchman is not pure evil without companionship. He is shown to be one of the most powerful supernatural beings in the ocean, rivaling King Neptune.
King Neptune King Neptune is a character on SpongeBob SquarePants. His name is often used in place of God's, with phrases such as "Dear Neptune," "Thank Neptune," "Neptune preserve her!," and "Oh my Neptune." However, he has never explicitly been shown to be worshiped by the creatures of the sea. He is a regal king who has a strong opinion of his rank as a deity and is known for using his powers to bully mortals and punish them for talking back to him. He often judges people for their sizes and thinks a person with a grand physical appearance is worthy of him.
Larry the Lobster Larry the Lobster is a muscular red lobster who, along with Scooter, is a common attendee of Goo Lagoon. He is a bodybuilder and is often seen competing or working out with other sea creatures. He is always seen in blue or green swim trunks, even when he is not at the beach. He regularly goes to Bikini Bottom's beach, Goo Lagoon and works as a lifeguard there. He is one of the strongest creatures in Bikini Bottom. He is also very popular and is idolized by many other beachgoers.
Harold & Margaret SquarePants Harold & Margaret are SpongeBob's father and Mother. Unlike their son, who is a squared-off tube sea sponge, Harold and his wife are designed as round sea sponges. Although both SpongeBob and his parents are modeled after real-life species of sea sponges, their markedly different appearances have not been explained.
Realistic Fish Head The Realistic Fish Head is a tuna who works as an announcer and anchorman in Bikini Bottom. He usually sits at a news desk while his coworker, Perch Perkins, reports live on the scene. He also narrates Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's show and sings in the SpongeBob SquarePants theme song.
Perch Perkins Perch Perkins is a famous field reporter who works for the Bikini Bottom News. He is a smooth talking news reporter and calming voice of the news and is shown to be fairly charismatic. Despite this, however, Perch is shown to be easily stressed and anxious. He gets angered easily and sometimes even storms off set. He may look respectable and well groomed but he is spiraling downwards mentally.
Jellyfish Jellyfish are gelatinous, free-swimming creatures with stingers commonly found throughout all oceans of the world. There is the sport dedicated to catching them, jellyfishing, usually at Jellyfish Fields. In comparison to the real world, Jellyfish act far more like real world counterpart than any other species in the show.
Betsy Krabs Betsy "Mama" Krabs is the wife of Victor Krabs, the mother of Eugene H. Krabs, and the paternal grandmother of Pearl Krabs and a maternal grandmother of her son's nephews. She lives in an anchor house like her son, only it is pink. She is generally shown to be nice and caring, as she loves her son and was nice to SpongeBob and Patrick when meeting them for the first time. In addition, she does not share her son's greedy tendencies.
Bubble Bass Bubble Bass seems to be a stereotypically rude neckbeard character. Like what he is based off, Bubble Bass is unmannerly, arrogant and rude, in that he lied to SpongeBob about the pickles missing from his Krabby Patty to destroy his confidence and get free food. Aside from this, he also promised to give SpongeBob and Patrick free lunches if they helped pack his things, only to make them do all the work and selfishly eat the free lunches he ordered for them at the end in front of them, displaying no regard to their honest effort.
Dirty Bubble The Dirty Bubble is one of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's archenemies along with Man Ray. He is a giant, transparent, brown, dirty bubble, hence his name. Being a bubble, the Dirty Bubble has the ability to float and fly in the air. He can also trap his enemies inside of his body with his awesome surface tension. Pointy objects are the Dirty Bubble's sole weakness, as they will simply pop him. He freaks out when near them. He is also weak against water, soap, or anything that can make him clean. This will turn him into the Clean Bubble as well as completely changing his personality.
Man Ray Man Ray is the greatest nemesis of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, alongside the Dirty Bubble. He is a humanoid being with a blue helmet shaped like the head of a Manta ray and a red bodysuit. He also possesses combat skills and seemingly has the power to shoot destructive lasers from his hands. Man Ray is a villain who wanted to take over the world and he is also short-tempered and temperamental.
Old Man Jenkins Jr. Old Man Jenkins Jr. is an elderly fish who is shown to usually be a strict, stubborn, and cranky old man. He has a strong dislike of flying machines and was even willing to knock out SpongeBob as a stuntman for revenge because of his flying machines. His stubborn side was shown when he refused to leave the Krusty Krab even though Mr. Krabs have told him several times to leave.
Squilliam Fancyson III Squilliam Fancyson III is a very wealthy and self-serving octopus. He met Squidward Tentacles in high school band class and became his arch-rival. Squilliam has succeeded in everything Squidward has failed in and thus looks down upon his arch rival. Squidward is painfully jealous and wishes to prove to Squilliam that he is not a loser. Like other octopus characters, Squilliam's character model is nearly identical to Squidward's, but he has a unibrow and wears a fancy maroon robe. He owns a private yacht, a private lake, a private heliport, a private island, and a balloon/casino.
